If you know your Irish history--or just listen closely to U2--then you'll recall that January 30, 1972, was a really rotten day in the conflict-riddled town of Derry. Catholic rights activists planned a peaceful protest, but things got ugly when the British army opened fire on protesters, killing 13 and wounding 14. A gripping reenactment, Bloody Sunday drops you smack-dab in the middle of the murderous mess, with handheld cameras zooming and swooshing around the preparations and the massacre itself, with lots of screaming, rock-throwing mobs, freaked-out civilians and confused officials. Think Blair Witch Project with soldiers and civil disobedience. The pre-conflict story keeps it amazingly balanced, giving us brief insight to the British soldiers' fears, while the tension-filled ride that follows demands full attention. A Bloody interesting film.
