It's nearly two decades after My Beautiful Laundrette director Stephen Frears returns to London, and you'll never believe what he shows you now. Set in the underground communities of illegal immigrants and their struggles, Chiwetel Ejiofor is an overworked Nigerian cab driver and hotel porter who sublets the couch from young Turkish immigrant Audrey Tautou. But when he discovers a human heart in a clogged toilet, he uncovers a foul-smelling reality. Seems the sleazy hotel manager is selling fake passports for functioning kidneys, and Tautou is thinking of taking him up on the offer. A very un-Amélie Tautou shows off great dramatic realism as the movie strikes a fresh balance between being a thriller, social commentary and being strangely funny. The combo makes Dirty Pretty Things more than pretty darn good.
