Marty Scorsese's long-delayed, troubled epic takes on culture clashes, politics, love and revenge in 1860s Manhattan's ugly Five Points district--and ends up a bloody mess. In short, fightin' Irishman Leonardo DiCaprio wants revenge on powerful immigrant hater Bill "the Butcher" Poole (Daniel Day-Lewis), who killed his father (Liam Neeson). As Leo's doing that, he accidentally--and needlessly--falls for giggling pickpocket Cameron Diaz. Oh, and then there are those gang wars and nasty draft riots. Day-Lewis hacks away the competition, while Leo and Cammie look like they're playing dress up. Nearly three hours long, Gangs wavers between being about the big picture and a character study--only to get lost like so many huddled masses.
