Katie Holmes is up Dawson's Creek without a paddle. In this disappointing directorial debut by Traffic scribe Stephen Gaghan, Holmes plays a busy college senior with issues, fighting to prove there's life after small-town poverty. To make matters worse, her ex-boyfriend (Brit babe Charlie Hunnam, as a rebellious rich kid who disappeared two years earlier) may now be stalking her, just as his missing-person investigation leads cop Benjamin Bratt into her life. Yep, that's a lot of confusion--for not a lot of payoff. The triple-yummy combo of Holmes, Bratt and Hunnam retains some viewer interest, but the thriller's Plot Twist finale is so rushed that audiences barely have time to enjoy it. In this case, Gaghan can abandon all hope of another Oscar. |
