Click is yet another uninspired Adam Sandler goof-fest with a long suffering leading lady, mildly bawdy gags—see Joe Schmo ogle female jogger—and a predictable ending. For anyone else, that might make for a forgettable dud. But this is Adam Sandler, a man who perfected this formula a decade ago, so chalk up this one as yet another forgettable hit.

Michael Newman (Sandler) is a workaholic architect with a neglected wife (Kate Beckinsale) and two kids. Obviously, he becomes consumed by his work and begins to neglect his family. He quickly learns that the new universal remote control he bought from a dubious mad scientist (Christopher Walken) at his local Bed, Bath, and Beyond has the power to stop, pause, and fast-forward his life. It’s a workable premise, sure, but also an overused one. Remember when it was a classic episode of The Twilight Zone? How about the 2001 Jesse Bradford tweener flick Clockstoppers?

It would be easy to look beyond the plot’s lack of originality if the film had something else going for it. It’s not particularly funny, it’s obnoxiously rife with product-placement, and aside from Christopher Walken, who does a good job, the acting is nothing to write home about either. Sandler is capable of convincingly stepping into character: witness his turn in 2004’s underrated Spanglish. Here, it’s just a rerun of the same old Sandler movie comedy tricks. Kate Beckinsale’s performance is fine, but the alluring starlet just isn’t believable as an ordinary housewife. There was also a notable lack of chemistry between Beckinsale and Sandler.

Ultimately, if you like Adam Sandler movies—and there are a lot of you—you will probably like this one too, but no matter which side of the Adam-Sandler –comedies-rule / Adam-Sandler-comedies-suck side of the fence you’re on, this hour-and-a-half of Click feels like nothing more than hitting rewind and play on a stale plot and jokes you’ve seen 100 times before.
