Movie Reviews: Bollywood Hollywood

A film that belies its grand-in-scope name. In a film named after two of the largest global celluloid factories, one would at least expect a reasonable amalgamation of the two very diverse strands of film craft.

A typically Bombay love story that attempts a blend, it has far too much of Bollywood and ends up almost as another NRI film, with little prospects of appealing to a wider Hollywood audience despite being made in English on western sets.

The set-in-Toronto film begins with well-heeled Rahul (Khanna) in search of a 'nice Indian girl' at his family's urging. His girlfriend has just died in a freak accident and he needs to have a woman in his arms at his sister's wedding just around the corner, or so his family feels.

Rahul decides to hire one, and chances upon Sue (Ray), whom he not only takes to be a Hispanic, but also an 'escort' woman. Hard, and for the audience, some amusing if predictable bargaining later, she agrees to the proposal.

Sue, or Sunita from Bhatinda, is obviously Punjabi and like all from the region on the big screen, can sing and dance to perfection. Which she proceeds to do at Rahul's sister Twinky's sangeet. Rahul is dumbstruck. And angry, especially when his mother invites Sue to stay in their house. And Sue charms her way into everybody's heart. Seen this twist in the plot before?

Even more predictably, Rahul is the last person to be charmed, despite urging from his confidant Rocky/ Rukina (Ranjit Choudhary) among others. When he finally does, all is song and dance for the next few reels as song after song flows, interspersed with some mandatory snatches of desultory conversation. When the break comes, as it had to, Rahul is left to do the wooing back standing on a car to reach Sue's first floor balcony, with her father urging encouragement from below to Rahul.

The film spoofs many an element of mainstream Bollywood. The characters are stock, even the support ones, as are the situations. Even the comic characters are straight out a typical Hindi film. Just about every cliché finds place here, including the item number, which crosses the gender divide too, being done by Akshaye Khanna here.

So does the film work at all? Yes, if seen either as a spoof on the Bollywood style of filmmaking (of which it does a fair job) or if the simple minded actually fall for the mushy love tale. Though set in Canada, most of the creative inputs, including acting and music direction, are by Indians.

There are a number of elements working for the film. The actors are largely above average to good. Ray could have had more facial expressions in a role that allowed an ample display of emotions, but seasoned performers like Pathak (in possibly her last role) and Kharbanda steal the show. Choudhary's performance as the cross-dressing singer provided the laughs.

Sandeep Chowta's music may not measure up to the levels reached in Fire or Earth, but is hummable nevertheless. The film has titles popping up at the beginning of each scene and they definitely add to the film. The dialogues could have done with more spontaneity.

Though the film is a move away from Mehta's best-known works in India in more ways than one, it has its own appeal and will provide a few light moments to even the meanest intellect. May be a name like Bollyfolk in Hollyland would have explained the content better.
