The smallest member of the Hundred Acre Wood family gets his moment in the spotlight in this winsome tale. Poor little Piglet (voice of John Fiedler) spends his time alone, drawing pictures of his adventures in which he depicts himself as a little pink dot amid well-defined and boisterous pals. Not that he really minds — he's little, after all — and contents himself with compiling scrapbooks until the day he spots Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore and Rabbit traipsing past his window and discovers he's been excluded from an elaborate plan to gather honey. Piglet is distraught, especially after his friends reiterate that he's too small to he helpful. Piglet tags along and inadvertently plays a key role in their plot to foil the spiteful bees, but the others ignore his contributions. The forlorn piggie wanders off on his own, and when Pooh and the gang are later forced to seek shelter in Piglet's tree-stump home, they discover his album. Appropriately chastened, they start to worry when their tiny buddy doesn't return and head out into the woods. They bring along Piglet's album, hoping to discover clues about their lost pal's whereabouts. The pictures prompt them to reminisce about earlier adventures via flashbacks of classic A.A. Milne tales — including their search for the North Pole, Kanga and Roo's arrival in the forest, and Eeyore's new home — and realize how integral Piglet has been to their adventures. Clearly geared towards the younger moviegoers, this gentle film lacks the kind of spunky inside jokes that animated films often include for the benefit of accompanying adults. The repetition of the obvious moral, worthy though it is, will also strike the post-preschool as a bit cloying. But the animation is seamless and capitalizes on the popularity of these franchised characters, who are also featured in countless television shows and the theatrical TIGGER MOVIE (2000), and Piglet's crayon drawings are refreshingly distinctive. The original Carly Simon songs are well performed, but their soothing lullaby qualities may cause those with short attention spans to nod off.
