If I do make it to Femina Miss India I will continue modelling At first glance, her small face and 5´ 6" frame defy her Punjabi-Afghan blood. But when she tells you that she hit a man for making a pass at her in a Kolkata market, you better believe it. Meet Celina Jaitly, dreamer, peripatetic aviator, beauty queen. "My father was in the infantry. We were always living in small towns which have limited options careerwise. So at 18, I decided to stay alone in Kolkata to realise my dreams," says the new Femina Miss India-Universe 2001. And yet, modelling was never her childhood dream. "Though my mother was a known model in Lucknow, I wanted to be a doctor. But the college in a far-flung place in Orissa, where I got admission was ugh´. So, I enrolled for a computer course. Meanwhile, a beauty contest in Kolkata and my subsequent win there, prompted me to stay back." A woman of fleeting thoughts and passions? "Not really. I just love to do many things simultaneously. And if one thing does not work, I move on. For example, I could not get into a decent medical college. But I am still interested in the subject and therefore, love reading medical thrillers. It all started when I experienced something unexplained. I am drawn to old bungalows, for in them I can see the story of the inhabitants. At times, I have experienced my astral self positioned at a different place from my actual physical body." X-Files meets Baywatch!! She is a girl who has her priorities clear. And even though her predecessors have all talked about saving the world with their tiaras, when Celina expresses her desire to work with the UN on issues like health and children, she comes across as genuine. Also, when one sees her quietly handing over chocolates to the Gujarat earthquake-hit children being treated at Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai, it´s difficult to take it as a publicity stunt. Winning the crown has only facilitated the realisation of her dreams, Celina clarifies. "Three to four years from now, I will enrol in a flying club in the US. I will have enough money by then," she says. Celina is thankful to God for "the smallest of happiness that has come my way." Perhaps that is why she still counts her one-year teenage stint at Binnaguri, a tiny hamlet close to the Bhutan border, to be one of her happiest moments till date. Or when her only brother, now nicknamed Brother India, joined the army. Or, for that matter her relationship with this good friend´ in Kolkata. But for the time being, she is quite happy with her idol, Amitabh Bachchan his height, his baritone voice and most importantly his honest eyes. Celina is very clear about where her loyalties lie. She confides that if she ever falls for a person not approved by her parents, she would choose to remain a spinster. But what is most striking is her attitude to take on the world. She may not have a bagful of degrees. But, this commerce graduate from Indira Gandhi National Open University is determined to carve out a politically strong position in this big bad world. Hence, it is not surprising that she values Sabira Merchant´s diction lessons the most. "This was the best part of the Miss India training. We can all talk. But how many of us can control a conversation?" In a world of beauty queens whose IQs are reportedly one-digit numbers, Celina Jaitly certainly seems to know how to talk the talk.
