Harry Potter continues to work box-office alchemy, with the boy wizard's second movie adventure taking in $88.4 million over opening weekend.
That was $700,000 more than distributor Warner Bros. had estimated on Sunday for "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," though still a bit less than the first film grossed in its debut last year.
"Chamber of Secrets" had the third-best debut ever, behind the $114.8 million haul for "Spider-Man" last spring and the $90.3 million take of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."
The new "Harry Potter" flick did break the record set by its predecessor for number of theaters and screens. "Chamber of Secrets" opened on an all-time high of 8,515 screens in a record 3,682 cinemas.
"Chamber of Secrets" closely mirrored the pattern established in the first movie adaptation of J.K. Rowling's fantasy books about Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Director Chris Columbus and all key cast members returned, including Daniel Radcliffe as Harry.
The top 20 movies at North American theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. and Nielsen EDI Inc. are:
