MUMBAI: Why is a rape victim or a victim of assault questioned whether the crime was provoked? Why is the world going on about Pooja Bhatt’s brother assaulting Ranvir Shorey when it was Ranvir who, in a drunken stupor, assaulted me first.

My question is: who is the victim here? The person who bleeds and goes to the police station first — as Ranvir did in this case — or is it the person who is recovering from surgery and has wounds both physical and mental. I went through surgery for a cyst three days ago.

I regret the physical hurt that Ranvir caused my brother and my brother caused him. But what I regret most is the capacity of people to be destroyed by alcohol.

A drunken Ranvir came home at night and when I didn’t let him drink further, we got into a scuffle. He assaulted me and I was bleeding from my mouth. This is when my brother Rahul intervened. Later we called our friend Amit Saxena, who took me to hospital. It did not cross our minds to put Ranvir behind bars. He was the one who went to the police station.

I have known Ranvir closely for the past few months and I maintain he is not a demon. There is something nice about him. But this does not give a person the right to be intoxicated and get abusive and make it seem that my 20-year-old brother assaulted him without a reason.

Once again, what I regret most is what alcohol does to a person. Unfortunately, I was the one who showed Ranvir the mirror. I hope he gathers up the pieces of his life.
