DURBAN: Bollywood fans were recently treated to four hours of music, dance and comedy as the stars of the Indian screen performed a live show in Durban, South Africa.
The man behind the Bollywood extravaganza was Amitabh Bachchan. Not surprising then that his show proved such a hit, considering his vast experience on the Indian screen and stage. Over the past thirty years he has starred in more than a hundred films.
"The idea really is that because you love our films so much we feel that we should try and give you as much as we can in the concert. That's why this, really this has been a very rewarding experience."
Bachchan was joined on stage by some of Bollywood's hottest stars, including Shah Rukh Khan, the star of Bollywood's debut at the Cannes Film Festival Devdas.
Shah Rukh Khan talked of the growing appetite for Indian cinema, due in part to the western exposure the whole Bollywood culture has experienced over the last year.
From Bend It Like Beckham and The Guru to Andrew Lloyd Webber's Bombay Dreams, the singing and dancing world of Bollwood has taken the western world by storm. "We would like to make a film from India, my take on that is, I would like to make films from India and shall I one day be in a position to make a film from India which is accepted the world over, more exposure for our films, bigger markets for our films, bigger budgets which means that we can make better films. And like Bachchan says, it's most welcome and films like Bend It Like Beckham or Guru showcasing what India is about is obviously very encouraging and something to be quite proud of."
Shah Rukh Khan has starred in most of the chart topping films that have recently come out of Bollywood, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which set the trend for Bollywood films in the 90s, Mohabbatein opposite Amitabh Bachchan, as the legendary emperor Asoka in Asoka the Great which he also produced, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham the most successful Bollywood film of all-time.
"The whole approach to filmmaking has changed because the markets have changed, people have changed, the perception of Indian films has changed, Bollywood becoming Bollywood overseas, there's a whole new section of people we have who have opened up to Bollywood" commented rising star Preity Zinta. And from the extraordinary number of people that came to Durban to experience Bollywood live on stage Zinta appears to be right.
