Don't expect a sex romp in Jism, the film that's being touted as an erotic thriller, as its hottest scenes are the ones that don't show any skin, says Pooja Bhatt.
"Jism is a very audacious film. It's about a married woman who says yes to an extramarital affair and looks at the whole question of love in a way never seen in a Hindi film. It's so refreshing to see a heroine who's so comfortable with her sexuality in a way that's generally considered unacceptable. It's a new look film with two actors who're very comfortable with their bodies", says the actress-turned-producer.
But Pooja warns audiences against expecting a sleaze feast. "Jism, like all my films, has a value system. It questions the logic and ethics of a hedonistic lifestyle. There's nothing sleazy or sensational in it. We haven't shown an iota of skin. If you ask me, the sexiest scenes are those where Bipasha and John don't even touch each other. We do have a love scene. But there's no skin show.
"Audiences are responding to the sense of abandon that John and Bipasha project. In Ek Chhotisi Love Story we didn't mind a teenager peeping at a woman. In Jism, two mature adults will get into an extramarital relationship, and in bed, and that may shock audiences."
The passionate producer is all praise for her lead pair.
"Bipasha was perfect for the lead. After Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi, we finally have an actress who's a woman from day one. All of us from my generation, whether it's Raveena Tandon or Karisma Kapoor were little girls who evolved into women. Bipasha reminds you of Ursula Andress or Sophia Loren.
"Bipasha is a gorgeous woman. John is a beautiful man. Whether it works or not, Jism takes a chance."
The producer in Pooja has completely taken over the actress. Though she promises to return to the screen by the end of 2003, she is far happier conceiving films rather than being in them.
Ahead of the release of Jism, she is immersed in the story of love and lust.
"The entire look of the film is mine. I've never been happier in my life than as a production designer, pushing props around the sets, colour coordinating the heroine's costumes," she says.
"Actually I'm Pooja the prop master on the sets. I've realised you don't need a lot of finances to make a film look aesthetic. I want to make most of my films within a Rs 30 million-Rs 40 million budget."
