From ramp to beauty pageant to cinema is a transition many models have made. But Lara Dutta's Bollywood debut is being talked about in hushed tones even before her film's release.
Andaz, starring the former Miss Universe, is scheduled for an early April release. Stepping into the film world has already been quite a bundle of adventures.
She remembers only too well how co-star Akshay Kumar saved her life in Cape Town while shooting a song.
"I don't want his ego to be tickled by saying this. But the fact is Akshay did save me when I slipped off a rock on a shore of Cape Town. I'd have been dead and gone if it wasn't for him!" Lara said.
She spent the first two months of 2002 shooting for her second film Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost with Abhishek Bachchan in far-off Jaisalmer. "Actually, it was quite peaceful. No cell phones, no going to (hangout joints like) the Olive or Fire & Ice and returning to work with a heavy head the next morning.
"We had a bit of a setback when Abhishek had to rush back to Mumbai after his grandfather's death. But director Apoorva Lakhia has done a wonderful job."
The woman who proved her fluency with the Hindi language at the IFFA awards 2002 in Malaysia seems to have adjusted wonderfully to the distanced worlds of modelling and acting.
"As Miss Universe I made a huge effort to keep at least some areas of my life to myself. The film industry requires you to drop all inhibitions, demolish all the walls built around you. It took me a while to get used to the constant glare.
"Know what? Now I love every bit of it. In fact I finished two films in six months - Andaz and Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost, which is really exhausting. My movie career took a long time to start. Once it did I felt like screaming, 'Please slow down!'"
Lara's eyes light up when she talks about her debut film Andaz. "To put a foot into the industry's door I couldn't have hoped for a better producer than Suneel Darshan and director Raj Kanwar.
"These are people who've been in the business long enough to know what the audience wants without getting crass about it. Being an untrained actress, I've my own method of acting which works for me."
Her second release gives Lara a completely different image. "I loved every second of shooting for Andaz. But I also enjoyed Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost, though it was done with a very different attitude.
"It was a far younger and unconventional crew. It's a small-budget film. I play a Rajasthani village belle called Kesar."
Lara's already on to her next film, Aan, for big time producer Feroz Nadiadwala where her co-star is again Akshay Kumar. She admits the film is a man's show.
"The women are the flavouring. But it isn't as drastic as falling asleep at the dinner table waiting for my man to come home! Thankfully I'm not the wife, only the fiancée."
"I've met quite a few filmmakers. I'd love to work with Mani Rathnam, Subhash Ghai, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Yash Chopra -- directors who present women so well on screen."
Completely at ease with the song-and-dance routine, Lara is quite a woman of the world who's not encountered male aggression in the film industry so far.
"I think to a large extent it depends on the individual. I mean if you give anyone an inch they'd take a mile. I've never had anyone make a pass at me."
A lot of her free time is spent travelling to her hometown Bangalore where her parents live and also working for the U.N.
She also readily admits to a special man in her life. "My man (TV personality) Kelly Dorjy supports me in everything I do. That makes my work so much more productive.
"It's a relationship with a lot of give and take. We've both been through a hell of a lot. He knows me from even before I was Miss India."
