As media persons and onlookers fought for a glimpse of the woman at the heart of Bollywood’s most recent love triangle, Aishwarya Rai was carried into the Hinduja Hospital, Mahim on a stretcher at 12.35 am today morning.
Vivek Oberoi, in a blue kurta was the first to step out of the ambulance in which Rai arrived, followed by a doctor and Rai’s mother.
Rai sustained a minor fracture on the little toe of her left foot and abrasions on her elbow and back when a jeep accidentally hit her whilst shooting for the film Khaki near Trimbakeshwar, around 25 kms from Nashik.
Four cars preceded Rai’s ambulance to the Hinduja Hospital. As the cars drove in through the casualty, where a crowd awaited, Rai’s ambulance sped in through the main entrance.
The security guards at the hospital spent five minutes controlling the crowd before they were able to open the ambulance door. Rai was immediately rushed into the hospital.
A few minutes before Rai reached the Hospital, Sahara’s Chief Subrata Roy entered with his wife.
The ex-Miss World had been rushed to Hinduja from Nashik’s Jai Hospital, where her wounds were attended to under local anaesthesia. Rai was air lifted from Ojhar, Nashik and flown to Mumbai Airport, Vakola where Vivek Oberoi awaited her.
At Nashik, there were crowds outside Jai Hospital on Timbak Road yesterday after news of Rai’s accident spread. She was brought to the hospital at around 6.15 pm.
The crowd was also treated to a glimpse of Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar, who accompanying Rai. Adequate police bandobast both outside and within the hospital, however, ensured good crowd control.
Dr Narendra Gujarati, who was on the panel of doctors that attended to Aishwarya at Jai Hospital told Mid Day that soon after she was brought there, she was taken to the main operation theatre on the first floor.
The doctors there found she had a minor fracture on the little toe of her left foot and abrasions on her elbow and in the back. The abrasions were the result of her falling on cactus thorns.
Gujarati said: “We administered local anaesthesia for stitching her wounds and put plaster below the knee. We also removed around seven to eight thorns that had entered deep inside her body.
The process of administering medical aid lasted more than an hour. Aishwarya was later shifted to the special ward room number 8 on the first floor. We have asked her to take complete bed rest for a few days.”
According to hospital sources, the entire film unit was present at the hospital. As there is no Nasik-Mumbai flight in the night, Bachchan arranged for a private chartered flight to airlift Aishwarya to the city.
Nashik Superintendent of Police (rural) Ravindra Singhal said a case of negligence and rash driving will be registered against the stunt master and driver of the jeep that hit the actress. He said arrest was pending.
“This is a minor offence, but if at all we receive a complaint against them from Aishwarya, serious action will be taken,” he said.
Preliminary investigations reveal the jeep driver lost control due to a problem with the brakes, resulting in the accident, police said. The Wadivare (rural) police have registered the happenings and are investigating the case.
