Catherine Zeta-Jones and husband Michael Douglas have won a partial victory in their landmark case against Hello! magazine for publishing unauthorized photographs of their 2000 wedding. The Oscar-winning pair had sued the celebrity publication, seeking $750,000 for invasion of privacy, but the amount they will receive is to be set at a future hearing. They say in a statement, "We deeply appreciate that the court has recognized the principle that every individual has the right to be protected from excessive and unwanted media intrusion into their private lives." Ruling judge Mr. Justice Lindsay gave his arbitration this morning on the long-running case that has gripped the media and public worldwide. However, although he ruled the couple won on the issue of commercial confidentiality, he also ruled that the magazine did not breach their right to privacy as no such right existed under British law. BBC reporter Nick Higham says, "He's decided there's no privacy law in Britain and he's not about to invent one. In that respect, Hello! are able to claim a degree of victory." Hello! printed photographs snapped by an unofficial photographer days before they were published in rival magazine OK!, who had signed an exclusive $1.5 million deal with the couple. Hello! publishing director Sally Cartwright says, "Nine of the 13 charges against us had been dismissed. I think it was unwise of them to sue," adding, "We were cleared of any attempt to damage the Douglases." Speaking in court, Chicago star Catherine spoke of feeling "devastated" and "violated" at the realization that paparazzi photos had been sneaked at her wedding - labeling the shots "sleazy" and "unflattering." OK! magazine also sued Hello! for $2.63 million in damages, but the ruling is yet to be delivered.
