MUMBAI: Even before the release of the spine-chiller Darna Mana Hai, its producer Ram Gopal Varma has decided to make a sequel.
"Regardless of whether Darna Mana Hai works at the box-office I've decided to make its sequel," Varma said.
"It will be called Darna Zaroori Hai, the opposite of Darna Mana Hai.
Gimmicky? But that's how the film is! I believe in the idea. And I want people to know before Darna Mana Hai releases that I'm making the sequel."
Pointing out the fact that sequels like Harmesh Malhotra's Nigahen, which followed Nagina, and Mahesh Manjrekar's Hathyar, which came after Vaastav, haven't really worked, and he shrugs.
"When have I ever cared about what works and what does not? Either Darna Zaroori Hai will break the jinx, or it will add to the jinx. Either way is fine by me. If in Hollywood we can have Dumb & Dumber, why can't I make Darna Zaroori Hai'
Varma says he loved the idea behind Darna Mana Hai, which is an episodic film, and immediately thought of how to carry the characters forward.
"The sequel will have six more bizarre stories and will feature completely different stars. We'll try to make the sequel better."
The publicity campaign for Darna Mana Hai has film critics in Mumbai up in arms.
Varma has put up hoardings featuring mock-reviews all over Mumbai, lampooning the styles of, and naming, well-known journalists and critics. "It's caused a major scandal," chuckles Varma.
"The critics are up in arms. I foresee bad reviews for Darna Mana Hai.
"I think our critics need to develop a sense of humour about themselves before poking fun at others. They get down to passing personal comments on filmmakers and even making doomsday prophecies in their reviews. So can't I use my medium to poke fun at them? It's a democratic country.
"Darna Mana Hai is so non-conventional in theme and structure that I just had to prepare the audience for something really different. I didn't want audiences to say, 'But where're the songs?!' There're none.
"So please have fun and go back."
Varma says Darna Mana Hai won't scare audiences like Bhoot did.
"It just shocks you every now and then, doesn't chill you to the bones. After that you return to your popcorn. In Bhoot, audiences forgot their popcorn. Both films have their own energy.
"The campaign for Darna Mana Hai has confused audiences. Now it's up to the film to hold them."
