Mariah Carey and her Emancipation of Mimi album led the American Music Award nominations Tuesday, scoring four nods, for pop and soul album and for top female singer in both categories.Right behind Carey are former American Idol champ Kelly Clarkson, rapper 50 Cent and Green Day, who all scored three nominations apiece, the Associated Press reports. Carey's Mimi, Clarkson's album Breakaway and Green Day 's American Idiot will compete in the best rock/pop album category. Other multiple nominees include Black Eyed Peas, Destiny's Child, Eminem, Fantasia, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw and Gretchen Wilson. McGraw and Keith are up for best male country singer, competing with Kenny Chesney, who recently made headlines for the breakup of his marriage to actress Renee Zellweger after four months. The 33rd annual American Music Awards, hosted by comedian Cedric the Entertainer, will air on ABC Nov. 22 from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
Nominees for the AMAs are chosen based on record sales, and winners are selected by a survey of about 20,000 listeners.
