Controversial hip-hop artist Kanye West got engaged to his girlfriend Alexis while the two were on vacation overseas, People magazine reported Friday.
West, who has produced records for artists such as Mariah Carey and Jay-Z, has kept his engagement carefully under wraps. Few details are known, including the circumstances of the engagement or even the last name of his fiancée.
West and his wife-to-be dated for several years prior to the rapper's major 2002 car crash that inspired his first hit single "Through the Wire." They recently reunited after splitting for two years.
West's breakthrough record "College Dropout" garnered him two Grammys, while last year's follow-up "Late Registration" earned him three more awards and featured the smash single "Gold Digger."
