Denying that Get Rich or Die Tryin rapper 50 cent, legally Curtis Jackson, was arrested for driving with an expired permit, the New York Police Department said he had only been issued summons in the matter. “There was a Curtis Jackson who was issued four summonses, not arrested,” a spokesperson for the department said.
Earlier reports had said the 31-year-old rapper was arrested Thursday when he was driving his silver Lamborghini in Midtown Manhattan. At about 2 pm, police officers nabbed 50 Cent for making erratic lane changes. Upon checking his papers, they found that he was driving with an expired permit and without insurance or vehicle registration, the reports said.
“The cops opened the door. ... He just got out of the car and put his hands on the car and they put the cuffs on him,” onlooker Ian Parvess was quoted in the reports as saying. The reports added that a sizeable audience had gathered around the spot of arrest and many booed the police officers for arresting the singer. At the time of the incident, 50 Cent was heading north on Eighth Avenue and had to call his friend to bail him out of the situation. The friend later confirmed to the police that the car did belong to the rapper and escorted him away from the police station.
50 Cent, who adopted the name from a Brooklyn thug, is the first singer after the Beatles to have four tracks in the top ten list of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. He is best known for his album and subsequent movie Get Rich or Die Tryin and another album The Massacre.
The rapper, who has a gangster image, was in 2000, shot at nine times, allegedly in a murder conspiracy by drug kingpin Kenneth 'Supreme' McGriff, whose criminal activities 50 Cent rapped about in his songs. 50 Cent also has also made news for his feuds with other rappers like The Game, Ja Rule, Nas, Joe Budden, Fat Joe, Shyne, Jadakiss and D-Block, many of whom have accused him of trying to gain publicity by insulting them in his songs.
