Will Ferrell skated past his competitors to take the gold medal at the North American box office with his new comedy "Blades of Glory," according to estimates released on Sunday.
"Blades" sold $33 million worth of tickets since opening on Friday. The three-day sum beat the most optimistic forecasts by $3 million, said the film's distributor, Paramount Pictures.
The opening ranked as Ferrell's second-best, behind last summer's equally absurdist sporting romp "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," which raced to $47 million during its first weekend.
Ferrell and Jon Heder ("Napoleon Dynamite") play the world's first competitive male pairs figure skaters in an irreverent comedy that enjoyed strong critical acclaim -- an increasing rarity for box office champs these days.
Paramount, a unit of Viacom Inc., said the film cost just more than $60 million to make. About three-quarters of the audience was aged under 35, the studio said. The movie was a co-production between Paramount's corporate siblings DreamWorks and MTV Films.
Also new on the box office chart was Walt Disney Co.'s animated comedy "Meet the Robinsons," which opened at No. 2 with $25.1 million, roughly in line with relatively modest expectations. The action centers on a nerdy orphan who is whisked away to a goofy futuristic world in a time machine.
The film was extensively reworked by John Lasseter, who took charge of Disney's struggling animation operations last year after Disney bought the cartoon powerhouse Pixar Animation Studios, where he was the creative chief behind blockbusters like "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles."
Sander Morris Harris analyst David Miller estimated the film cost Disney about $52 million to make and $65 million to market and distribute.
Former chart-topper "300" slipped one place to No. 3 with $11.2 million. The four-week total for the gruesome ancient epic rose to $179.7 million. Just behind it was last weekend's champion, the animated "TMNT," with $9.2 million. The resurrection of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has earned $38.4 million after 10 days. Both films were released by Warner Bros. Pictures, a unit of Time Warner Inc.
Disney's "Wild Hogs" rounded out the top five, slipping one place with $8.4 million. After five weeks, the comedy has earned $135.4 million.
"300" was the top film internationally, earning $30 million from 52 markets, Warner Bros. said. New No. 1 openings included Brazil and Argentina. The overseas total stands at $125.5 million, bolstered by sales in Britain ($17.6 million) and South Korea ($15.2 million). The film opens in Germany and Australia on Thursday.
